A hemorrhoidectomy is a surgery performed by the Proctologist, Dr. Maz, to remove either internal or external hemorrhoids that are severe. Surgical hemorrhoidectomy is the most effective treatment for hemorrhoids. There are many surgical approaches to a hemorrhoidectomy. There is a conventional excisional hemorrhoidectomy as well as a THD Hemorrhoidectomy/ Hemorrhoidopexy, also known as Transanal Hemorrhhoidal Dearterialization. This is a cutting-edge procedure designed to cut the blood supply off to the arteries of the internal hemorrhoids while pulling them up in the anal canal and rectum. The advantage of the THD procedure is that it has less reported pain without cutting or surgical incisions.
Though over 90% of our patient’s hemorrhoids are successfully managed with non-surgical treatments, on occasion when the hemorrhoids too large, prolapsing extensively or too severe, surgical hemorrhoidectomy may be necessary.
A hemorrhoidectomy is typically only performed by the Proctologist for the most severe hemorrhoid cases. If you have symptomatic hemorrhoids, a less invasive treatment such as rubber band ligation or IRC (infrared coagulation) can be just as effective.
Please note: Hemorrhoidectomy is performed in the operating room under anesthesia for optimal comfort.
